Description
The Toyota Prius v does not use a traditional geared gearbox or a belt-and-pulley CVT. Instead, it utilizes a highly durable Hybrid Transaxle, often referred to as an eCVT (Electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission), which is the core of the Toyota Hybrid System (THS). This system employs a planetary gear set (known as a Power Split Device or PSD) to seamlessly blend power from the gasoline engine and two motor-generators (MG1 and MG2), achieving an infinite range of “gear ratios” for optimal efficiency. This design has very few mechanical wear parts, contributing to the Prius v’s reputation for high reliability and exceptional fuel economy.
